A festival for intent

New Kind creates a new event in Raleigh dedicated to discovering the people designing the future

Starting in 2009, Hopscotch Music Festival has brought people to the streets to wander, explore, and connect in downtown Raleigh.

Hopscotch creates a sense of vibrancy by bringing people together to experience this city. Over the course of five years it has become one of the best independent music festivals in the country.

As part of it’s 5th Anniversary, New Kind worked with Hopscotch Music creators to launch an inaugural design festival. Together we created a two-day event dedicated to discovering the people designing the future.

Raleigh has an active design community. So extending Hopscotch into a design event was a natural fit.

Working with the Hopscotch team, we saw opportunities to highlight local design talent while bringing in fresh inspiration from national and international leaders in the field.

Choosing a pathway

To create an event that celebrated  design as an intentional process to create the future, we sought out forward-thinking risk-takers—the designers who are pushing their industries forward.

We found 35 speakers across multiple industries to share their experiences. We helped organize interactive sessions, workshops, and parties—hosted in multiple venues within a walkable footprint of downtown Raleigh, including museums, theaters, galleries, and bars.

The festival became part of the Raleigh M.A.I.N Event—a yearly celebration of local creativity. We collaborated with other local agencies, city government officials, and volunteers to spread the word.

Inciting a movement

It was thrilling to see the festival take shape as industry professionals and community members from all over the region converged on downtown Raleigh to learn, to engage, to be inspired.  The event got great press coverage in publications like Paste Magazine, GDUSA, and Garden & Gun.

With the help of our design partners, generous sponsors, insightful speakers, and enthusiastic festival-goers, we created something original and special to Raleigh.
