Getting clear about your brand comes before any successful marketing strategy. Marketing is overwhelming enough. Especially when you’re trying to reach a wicked smart and skeptical audience — that HATES MARKETING.

Here’s the good news: when you start with brand, marketing gets way easier. That’s because the process of working on your brand gives you clarity on why your organization exists, and why your customers should care. When your brand is on point, all your marketing strategies can flow from that common foundation.

Imagine if your marketing team all used a common document that was backed by solid brand research and had all the answers. Would you be able to reach more of the right people with your message?

Yes. And you can get started now.

It’s okay if you’re not ready for a full rebrand right now. You don’t have to do it all at once. You can start small. The perfect first step to take now is to assess your own brand.

The four critical elements of your brand are:

  • Purpose—why you exist and why your customers should care
  • Positioning Strategy—your competitive markets and differentiators
  • Messaging Strategy—how you articulate and share your story with the world
  • Visual Strategy—how you communicate your brand through a visual system

The Brand Assessment Quiz is broken up into 4 sections—each section tests one brand element. For each statement, you’ll be asked to rank your brand on a scale of 1 to 5—where 1 is weak and 5 is strong. The statements themselves are designed to give you insight into how, at its strongest, your brand can support your company’s growth. At the end of each section, you’ll receive a score out of 25 total possible points, and specific recommendations based on your score.

Before you begin, print the Brand Assessment PDF. It’s the same quiz in a different format. You can use it to keep track of your scores as you go through each section. And to calculate your final score. Note, that because of limitations with the quiz tool, the online version of the quiz won’t calculate your final score. We recommend that you print out the PDF version to log your scores. Plus, it’s helpful to see all the sections laid out together on the page.

Finally, print out the worksheet with specific questions and exercises to help you strengthen each of the crucial brand elements. The worksheet will guide you to dig deep to answer core questions about why your company exists in the world, study your competitive market, and learn how to translate that knowledge into your messaging and visual strategy.
