Defining a City’s Future

New Kind helps engage citizens in the adventure of creating Raleigh’s future by facilitating creative conversations and designing shareable reports that show the steps necessary to make the strategy come to life.

Over the years, Raleigh has enjoyed high praise as a great place to live and work from prominent media outlets like Money Magazine, Forbes, and MSNBC.

With friendly people, a creative culture, and a reputation for fabulous quality of life, Raleigh is one of the fastest growing areas in the country.

In 2011, several leaders in Raleigh, including City Councilor Mary Ann Baldwin and NC State Vice Chancellor of Research, Innovation and Economic Development Dr. Terri Lomax saw an opportunity to engage a passionate community of citizens in co-creating an even more exciting future for Raleigh.
Innovate Raleigh was born.

“We want to continue to be a prosperous region, but we can’t rely on the past to determine our future. Having a great national brand requires continuous work.”

—Mary-Ann Baldwin, Raleigh City Councilor

For the past two years, the Innovate Raleigh Summit has acted as a connector and celebrator of smart people doing big things in the region. Each year at the Summit, the Innovate Raleigh community comes together to discuss challenges, celebrate collective successes, and unite around big ideas to make the city one of the top five hubs for innovation and entrepreneurship in the country.

At the summits, we facilitated breakout sessions to inspire the ideas that lead to action. Throughout the day, we documented the conversations in the form of mindmaps.

In the weeks following the Innovation Summits, we worked together with organizers to create reports that visually synthesized key ideas that emerged. These reports have been shared across the Raleigh community and have become useful tools for continuing the conversation about the future of the city. The Innovate Raleigh community has continued to grow. An ultimately, the passion and energy of this community is what brings closer the goal of making Raleigh one of the top five centers of innovation and entrepreneurship in the country.

“Throughout our work together, New Kind has helped us create a collaborative space where people from industry, education, municipal government, and entrepreneurship can gather to create the future of our city. They've been a valuable partner in building momentum and crafting the story of where our community is going.'” Mary-Ann Baldwin
